Recognition of prior learning: information for employers
Recognition of prior learning, also referred to as RPL or recognition of current competencies, is the formal acknowledgement of a person’s current skills and knowledge, no matter how, when or where the learning occurred.
These skills, knowledge or experience may have been gained in a number of ways, for example through:
- formal or informal training and education
- work experience (including volunteer experience)
- general life experience.
Recognition of prior learning can benefit employers by:
- helping your staff achieve full or part qualifications and could motivate staff to commit themselves to your business
- helping you identify areas where your staff may need further training. It can help you target your training investment, and actually reduce training costs
- boosting productivity and help you retain an edge over competitors
- saving time in getting your workforce qualified.
The process of recognising skills or knowledge involves an assessment by a registered training organisation to see if a person's skills and esperience meet current industry standards.
